What’s Missing Is Recognition.

The myth that “Africa has no talent” persists in global business circles. But let’s be clear: talent is everywhere. What is unevenly distributed is opportunity.

Africa has the largest youth population in the world, with more than 70% under 30. That does not guarantee a pipeline of skilled professionals — but it does make the talent pool far too significant for global markets to ignore.

The question is not whether Africa has talent. It is whether global businesses are prepared to see it, engage it, and compete for it.

Talent Is Already Here

In our work, we have met hundreds of founders and operators across Africa. Many of the most capable leaders did not study at Stanford or Oxford. They learned to operate by building — often bootstrapping networks in complex, resource-constrained environments.

Africa’s universities rarely feature in global top 10 rankings, but there are world-class institutions across the continent: University of Cape Town, Ashesi University, Strathmore, Cheikh Anta Diop, and Mohammed V, among others. Added to this are growing technical academies like Moringa School, ALX, and Decagon, which are producing the next generation of builders.

Beyond formal education, Africa’s environments themselves shape capability. Navigating unreliable infrastructure, rigid hierarchies, or volatile systems creates resilience, resourcefulness, and adaptability. These are not gaps. They are competitive advantages.

What African Talent Brings to the Table

When global leaders look closely, they find African professionals bringing distinctive strengths that complement technical ability:

Resilience. Growing up with instability or studying through power cuts fosters a discipline to keep going — a vital edge in uncertain markets.

Flexibility. Many thrive in unstructured environments, improvising and adapting quickly to change.

Grassroots insight. Context creates intuition. Proximity to real-world challenges shapes product thinking in ways case studies cannot.

High EQ and improvisation. African professionals often learn to build around obstacles, manage across cultures, and navigate complexity with diplomacy.

These are not soft skills. They are survival skills — and in global teams, they are rare and invaluable.

The Talent Arbitrage

Hiring in Africa is often 50–70% more affordable than in Europe or the U.S. But the arbitrage is not only about cost. It is about perspective and capability.

African teams are accustomed to resource-constrained execution and fragmented systems. This makes them uniquely suited for companies expanding into emerging markets. Time zone alignment with Europe and partial overlap with the U.S. makes real-time collaboration feasible.

At Lissom Advisory, we see this dynamic firsthand in our portfolio: from startups in the Future of Work space to companies providing marketing, finance, and tech services to global clients. The story is consistent: output is high, burn is low, and teams bring context that others cannot replicate.

Global Proof Points

This is not theoretical. It is happening today.

Flutterwave, Paystack, and Yoco have scaled with African teams at their core.

Big Tech — Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta — are investing in African R&D and engineering hubs, not out of charity, but strategy.

Consulting firms now rely heavily on African professionals. The old model of parachuting in expats has proven costly, slow, and less effective. Clients increasingly expect local expertise.

The same trend is visible across SMEs and startups we work with — African talent is powering products and services for European and American clients, and thriving while doing so.

Closing the Gap

The narrative that Africa lacks talent is outdated. What is missing is recognition, visibility, and a shift in hiring practices. As global labor costs rise and remote work normalizes, businesses will look to Africa not out of charity but necessity. The smartest already are.

Overlooking African talent means missing one of the most strategic opportunities in global business today.

Takeaway

Africa has the talent. The leaders who recognize it, invest in it, and build with it will find themselves ahead of the curve.

—

At Lissom Advisory, we work with investors and business leaders to identify, engage, and empower African talent as a strategic advantage. Through our Emerging Market Leadership & Strategy Program, we help decision-makers build the teams that scale businesses across diverse and complex markets.

Written by Art Chupeau, Founder & Managing Partner at Lissom Advisory.

The myth that “Africa has no talent” persists in global business circles.
