We would agree with that — and not just in Africa. Try building one business seamlessly across all of Europe or Asia, and you will face the same challenge. So the question is: what lies behind the assumption that Africa “doesn’t scale”?

Scaling across an entire continent is a big ask anywhere. But too often, this reality is twisted into a myth: that Africa doesn’t offer scale at all. That is simply not true.

When we speak with founders, business leaders, and investors about scale in Africa, our message is clear: if a business can own just one national market and layer in technology, it can do extremely well. Africa is not a place where scale is absent. It is a place where contextual scale matters. It may not look like what outsiders expect, but it works — and often profitably.

Scale by Design: Two Case Studies

M-Kopa: Building Credit Through Energy Access

M-Kopa is a fintech company that offers connected asset financing for items such as solar home systems and smartphones, using a pay-as-you-go model. Customers make small daily payments via mobile money and build ownership over time.

This approach works in markets where traditional credit systems do not reach, and where infrastructure gaps such as electricity supply are real.

M-Kopa’s path to scale was deliberate:

Starting with Kenya, where mobile money (M-Pesa) was already mature.

Building a local agent network instead of relying on formal retail.

Expanding gradually into Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa.

Designing around informal financial behavior rather than trying to replace it.

The result? Over 3 million people connected to energy and financing solutions.

Jumia: E-Commerce Tailored to African Realities

Jumia is often described as the “Amazon of Africa,” but its success came from doing things very differently.

In regions where logistics and payments were fragmented, Jumia adapted by:

Launching JumiaPay to address digital payments.

Offering cash-on-delivery to build consumer trust.

Building Jumia Logistics to manage last-mile delivery.

Phasing its expansion, focusing on Nigeria, Egypt, and Kenya before scaling further.

Partnering with telecoms and governments to reduce friction.

Today, Jumia operates in nine countries and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Neither company tried to scale across 54 countries at once. They scaled with intention — through local knowledge, embedded infrastructure, and patience.

What It Takes to Scale in Africa

From these examples and many others, we see a consistent set of principles that underpin successful scaling across African markets:

Experienced, grounded teams
Combining local talent who understand the cultural and regulatory terrain with globally minded operators who bring systems thinking.

Strategic partnerships
Collaborating with telcos, agents, banks, and logistics providers — building trust-based relationships rather than transactional contracts.

Patience and sequencing
This is not about entering every market at once. It is about choosing the right market, building depth, and expanding with intention.

Scaling in Africa does not mean “everywhere, all at once.” It means the right place, the right model, at the right time.

Rethinking Scale Through a Local Lens

When people say Africa does not scale, they are often applying a model that does not fit. Scale here is not just about size; it is about resonance, contextual fit, and knowing what success looks like locally.

Business leaders who can shift that lens — and who work with the right counterparts on the continent — will discover markets ready for their offerings, teams capable of building them, and customers eager to engage.

Not every business will make the leap. That is fine. But it should be an informed decision — not a missed opportunity built on an outdated assumption.

Takeaway

Africa offers scalability — but on its own terms. The companies that succeed are those who design for context, scale by design, and expand with patience.

—

At Lissom Advisory, we work with leaders and investors seeking to understand how growth plays out in Africa’s diverse markets.
